Digital Presence in the Library
Hello Everyone!
Welcome to my blog.
Enjoy!
Digital has been present in libraries for many, many years
now and it’s only going to keep advancing, so for libraries to remain up-to-date and keep library patrons coming back they need to take advantage of the different ways they can use online sources
to promote their libraries.
Social media is a great way for a library to promote itself. There are so many different social media platforms that libraries have access to that it seems silly not to take advantage of any of them. Some are Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and even Blogs. If a library wants to promote to more people, the best idea would be to utilize more than one of the numerous social media platforms. For example, my city's library, the Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL) is promoting #NationalBookmobileDay on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to call attention to and celebrate all the great work the libraries Literacy Outreach Team has done in the past year delivering books, presenting storytimes, and providing training for teachers all over Virginia Beach. Doing this ensures more patrons see what is being promoted because while it is not uncommon for people to utilize numerous social media platforms, there are still many who use only one and have always only used only one. Keep in mind, too, that not there are some who don't even use social media and they are more comfortable simply going to the library website. So of course, the best and most important place to promote the library is on the library website itself.
Yes, it is true that not many librarians like to flaunt all the hard work they put forth to make their libraries great because it may seem like bragging. Don't look at it as bragging. Look at as being proud of what your library has done and is capable of accomplishing. No one is going to know what your library has to offer if you are not willing to put it out there.
While at this time, most of the time I spend on social media is for fun and personal and usually very brief, I am fairly comfortable navigating it. I do utilize three different platforms, but spend the majority of my time using Twitter, so it is where I feel most comfortable. Despite that, I do sometimes find it difficult to create and tweet original tweets. I occasionally feel what I have to say is not very important, so I keep it to myself. I would consider myself more of an observer, so I do to retweet a lot.
If I had to moderate a social media platform and promote on it, I would prefer Twitter. Creating and posting original tweets would not be difficult because it would not be a personal account. I would be doing it for the library.
